MY THERAPEUTIC APPROACH
I work integratively and tailor therapy to the individual young person.
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to adolescent therapy.
CBT can be particularly helpful in understanding the relationship between thoughts, feelings and behaviours and developing practical strategies for anxiety, low mood and unhelpful patterns.
Psychoeducation can help teenagers understand what is happening in their minds and bodies, while mindfulness and emotional regulation strategies can help them manage difficult emotions more effectively.
I may also draw on Solution-Focused Therapy and other approaches depending on the young person's needs, developmental stage and goals.
However, therapy isn't only about choosing the right therapeutic approach. It is also about finding a way of working that the young person can genuinely engage with.
Sometimes walking, creating, playing or simply sharing a hot chocolate can make it easier to talk.
The most important starting point is the therapeutic relationship.
A teenager is much more likely to engage in therapy when they feel heard, respected and understood.
